Lolita's Personality

Macaws make wonderful companion birds. They are smart and affectionate. These birds do best with well-rounded families. They can become bored quickly and will discover ways to entertain themselves if their owners are not engaged with them often enough. Macaws that aren't socialized may become aggressive and may even bite. It is crucial to have clear boundaries set to ensure that the buy macaw does feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general, are active birds who are a joy to play with, interact with and climb. They need to spend at least 2 to 3 hours every day outside to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They love playing games, learning tricks and listening to music. They also love going to parks and playgrounds while hiking, and also visiting local restaurants and bars. Apart from being a great pet, they are also great pets for children.

Despite their adoring nature however, these birds can be loud and can cause a disturbance for those living near. They can emit ear-splitting calls and screeches that can be a nuisance to those who live in condos or apartments.

Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means males and females are hard to differentiate. Because of this, DNA testing is the only method of determining the sex. Once the bird's sex is determined the breeding process can begin.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases and tricks. This is a long process and the owner must be patient and recognize that this is a difficult task. Positive reinforcement can help speed up the process, and can help to correct any behavioral issues.

Lolita's Care

Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to stop performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, activists were hopeful that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. However, she was never given the chance to go back to sea.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also place her in a tank one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, vowed to work on plans with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her to eventually open water. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could live for the remainder of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and are close to their family members until death. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is being released into the wild. The nation's most active activists including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her retirement from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

Miami Seaquarium released a series updates on the status of Lolita's health however there are many questions. Akromas and others who have been trained or supervised Lolita's health over time are concerned about her diet. According to the latest update on the Friends of Lolita site, she consumes 115 pounds of salmon a day, as well as herring, capelin and squid.

The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they feed their killer whales, specifically Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and despite being threatened in the wild, she is in an aquarium that some claim is too small for her.

Lolita's Health

Unfortunately these plans came late for the whale that was so beloved, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal problem.
