Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita’s Personality

Macaws make wonderful companion birds. They are incredibly affectionate and intelligent. They are best with well-rounded families. They are easily bored and find different ways to entertain themselves if their owners do not interact with them enough. If they aren't socialized properly, macaws can become aggressive and even bite. It is important to establish clear boundaries so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are lively birds who are fond of playing, climbing and interact. They require 2 to 3 hours per day out of their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks and listening to music. They also love playing in parks and playgrounds as well as hiking and going to local restaurants and bars. Apart from being a great pet, they also make loving companions for children.

They can be extremely loud, despite their affection for their mate. They can also be a nuisance for those living nearby. They can be heard making ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which could be a problem in apartments and condos or near young children who might be startled by their noise.

Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means males and females are difficult to differentiate. Because of this, the only way to identify sex is through DNA testing. Once the birds' sex is known the breeding process can begin.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases and tricks. This is not a quick process, and it is crucial that the owner has patience and understands that this is not an undertaking to be taken lightly. Positive reinforcement can speed up the process, and correct any behavioral issues.

Lolita's Care

Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to retire from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, marine biologists hoped Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to return to the sea.

Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they put her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her to be a family member and plan that would eventually take her to the open water. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could stay for the rest of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals that connect with their family members until death. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is now being released into the wild. People from all over the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

Like any animal species captive, a blue and gold macaw's health is based on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds require premium food and lots of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. A well-fed macaw in captivity could live up to 60 years old. This majestic bird also needs plenty of space to fly and exercise.

Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita has been critiqued for the quality of the food they provide to their killer whales. The orca, who was 57 years old, was removed from Puget Sound, Washington, in 1970. While the species is endangered living in a tank that many consider to be too small.

Lolita's Health

While her beauty is unquestionable, Lolita's health continues to decline. She has been a source of concern for animal welfare groups who want to see her returned into the wild. Lolita has been living at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and was an attraction for tourists for many years. She has battled chronic illnesses and a debilitating infection that has left her in a fragile condition.

The Miami Seaquarium which is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not disclosed information about Lolita's current health. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has posted monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These updates indicate that Toki is aging rapidly and her health has deteriorated.

Since her captor does not need to reveal this information, it is unclear what health issue the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies collected from Sea World. This shows that kidney diseases often play a factor in the death of orcas in captivity.

Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita many believe that she could be closer than ever to an unspoiled life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to relocate the whale out of her tank into her home waters in the Pacific.

The move comes following years of public pressure as well as from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean and perhaps even meet the orca believed to be her mother. Unfortunately, these plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
