Lolita's Personality

They need to spend at least 2 to 3-hours each day in the outdoors for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They enjoy visiting playgrounds and parks as much as hiking, local eateries and bars. They are not only an excellent pet, but also a wonderful pet for children.

These birds can be very loud, despite their love for them. They can also be a nuisance for those who live nearby. They can be heard making ear-splitting calls and screeches, which can be a nuisance to those living in condos or apartments.

Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means that males and females are difficult to distinguish. Because of this, DNA testing is the only reliable method of determining the sex. Once sex is established, pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.

Lolita's Care

Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to retire from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to return to the ocean.

Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They sabotage her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. Additionally, they put her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her a relative and plan to eventually transport her to open waters. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast, where she could spend the rest of her days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean not an actual concrete tank.

If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. Lolita's Diet

These beautiful birds require premium food and plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains. In the wild, a macaw that is well-fed can expect to live for up to 60 years. This magnificent bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.

Despite the ongoing health concerns of Lolita, many people believe that she could be closer than ever to living a wild life. The new owner of Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to transfer the whale out of her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.

The move comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean and perhaps even meet the orca believed to be her mother. These plans were too late to save the beloved whale that passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
