Lolita's Personality

They can be bored quickly and discover ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't involved enough with them. Lolita's care

For decades activists have been lobbying for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her believed that Lolita would have a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to go back to the ocean.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by making her perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with high-speed circles and head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and harming her immune system. In addition, they keep her in a tiny tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, promised to develop plans with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to eventually open water. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could stay for the rest of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is being released into the wild. Lolita's Diet

As with any species of animal captive, a gold and blue macaw's health is based on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds require premium food, as well as plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Lolita's Health

Lolita is beautiful, however her health continues to decline. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and wish to see her released back into nature. She has been fighting persistent illnesses and an infection that has left her in a fragile condition.

The Dolphin Company, which now is the owner of the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any details regarding the condition of Lolita. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. These show that she is aging quickly and that her health is deteriorating.

Since her captor does not need to reveal this information, it is not clear what specific health issue the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease is often an important part in the deaths of orcas in captivity.

Despite the ongoing health issues there is a lot of hope that Lolita may be closer to a life in the wild than before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to move the whale out of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.

After years of public pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea, where she can swim deep in the water and perhaps be being reunited with her mother orca. Unfortunately these plans came late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday from what was believed to be a kidney issue.
