Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

The Leia blue macaw and red macaw-and-gold macaw is an exquisite bird with a stunning visual appeal. Its social nature makes it a great companion for families. It is also excellent in socializing, and can quickly learn new phrases and tricks.

Lolita's Personality

Macaws are a wonderful companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. They thrive in well-rounded families. They are prone to becoming bored and will find other ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't interacting with them enough. Macaws who aren't properly socialized can become aggressive, and may even bite. It is crucial to have clear boundaries set so the Tallula indigo park mollie macaw does not feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that enjoy playing, interacting and climb. They need at least 2 to 3 hours per day outside their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They also love going to parks and playgrounds, hiking and visiting local restaurants and bars. Apart from being a great pet, they also make loving pets for children.

These birds can be very loud, despite their adoration for them. They can also be a nuisance for people living near. They are capable of ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be a nuisance in condos and apartments or in close proximity to children who might be startled by their noise.

Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, meaning males and females are difficult to distinguish. Because of this, DNA testing is the only reliable method to determine sex. Once sex has been determined pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.

Lolita's Care

For a long time activists have been lobbying for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists were hopeful that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get a chance to return to the sea.

Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her in danger. They are a danger to her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also keep her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, vowed to work on a plan with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to eventually open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast, where she could live the rest of her days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by the actual ocean not an empty concrete tank.

If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals who are close to their family members until they die. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have demanded Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. They include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

A balanced diet is essential for the health of a gold and blue macaw. These beautiful birds need high-quality food, as well as lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A well-fed macaw parrot cost in captivity could live up to 60 years old. Additionally, this magnificent bird requires plenty of room to fly and exercise.

Lolita's Health

Despite the ongoing health concerns of Lolita Many people are hopeful that she may be closer than ever to a wild life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has pledged to moving the whale out of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.

The decision comes after years of public pressure, including from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary in which she can swim in the ocean and perhaps even be reunited with the orca believed to be her mother. These plans came too late to save the whale, which passed away on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney problem.
