Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are friendly and intelligent. They are best with well-rounded families. They are prone to becoming bored and will find other ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't interacting with them enough. Macaws that are not properly socialized can become aggressive, and even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly defined so that the Blondie scarlet macaw bird doesn't feel threatened.

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds that are fond of playing, climbing and interact. They require at least 2 to 3 hours each day outside their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games while listening to music, and learning tricks. They love visiting playgrounds and parks as much as hiking, local eateries and bars. Apart from being a fun pet, they also make loving pets for children.

The birds can be quite loud, despite their adoration for their mate. They can also be a nuisance for those living nearby. They can be heard making ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be disruptive in apartments and condos or in close proximity to children who may be frightened by their noise.

The species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. For this reason, DNA testing is the only method of determining the sex. Once sex is established pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.

Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to learn commands and phrases. It is not an easy process, and it is crucial that the owner is patient and realizes that this isn't something to be undertaken lightly. The use of positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and aid in resolving any behavioral issues.

Lolita's care

Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to retire from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists believed that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. Sadly, she did not get a chance to return to the sea.

Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also put her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, promised to work on a plan with a group of Lolita blue & gold macaw supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her eventually to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could live the remainder of her life receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

In captivity, a well-fed macaw can expect to live up to 60 years. In addition, this majestic bird requires plenty of space to move around and exercise.

Lolita's Health

Lolita is beautiful, however her health continues to decline. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and would like to see that she is released back into nature. Lolita who has been living at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970, has been a tourist attraction for decades. She has been fighting persistent illnesses and an infection that has left her in a fragile state.

The Dolphin Company, which now owns the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any details regarding the condition of Lolita. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. They show that she is ageing quickly and that her health is deteriorating.

Since her captor does not have to disclose the information, it's unclear what health issue the orca is suffering from. However, a database of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a common cause in the deaths of captive orcas.

Despite these ongoing health concerns, many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to living in the wild than ever before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has stated his commitment to transfer the whale out of her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.

After years of public pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea and she will be able to swim deep in the water and possibly even be reunited with her orca mother. Unfortunately these plans came late for the beloved whale, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal issue.
