Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go back to the ocean.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. They also keep her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her to be a family member and plan that would eventually take her to the open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could live for the rest of her days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami house and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.

If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals who connect with their family members until death. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is being released into the wild. People from all over the country have called for Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. Despite the ongoing health issues, many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to a life in the wild than before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to relocate the whale out of her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.

After years of public pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea where she can go swimming in the deep sea, perhaps even being reunited with her mother orca. Sadly these plans came late for the beloved whale, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a kidney issue.
