Lolita's Personality

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds who are fond of playing, climbing and play. They require at least 2 to 3 hours each day outside their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks and listening to music. They love going to playgrounds and parks as much as local restaurants and bars. Apart from being a fun pet they also make wonderful pets for children.

Despite their adoring appearance however, these birds can be loud and can be a nuisance for those living near. They can make high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which can be a nuisance in condominiums and apartments, or in close proximity to children who may be frightened by their noise.

This species is also monomorphic. Females and males can be difficult to distinguish. Due to this the only way to identify sex is through DNA testing. Once sex has been determined pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.

Lolita's care

For a long time, activists have been pleading for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, marine biologists hoped that Lolita might have a similar fate. Sadly, she never had a chance to return to the sea.

Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her at risk. They cause harm to her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her a relative in a plan to eventually move her to open water. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could live for the remainder of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals who bond with their family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. Activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her retirement from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

Sadly these plans came late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a kidney issue.
