What to Look For in a Good Robot Vacuum
A robot vacuum can keep you on the top of pet hair and lint on daily basis. Many of them use apps to allow you to schedule cleaning sessions and create virtual boundaries, or 'walls' to keep them from areas that you don't want to be cleaned.
This mop and vac creates a home map after its first run, storing your home's layout for future tasks. It comes with self-cleaning brush rolls and an extra-large dust bin that empties automatically.
Object Detection
When you are choosing a robotic vacuum, choose one that can take in large items, like lamp cords and toys, and also dust particles. This will ensure they don't get caught in the roller brush and don't end up on your floors. This is particularly important if your robot will be cleaned frequently by children or pets.
A model that has a powerful engine and lots of suction is also a good option. This will enable it to be more effective in eliminating dust, pet hair, and lint from carpets as well as hardwood flooring.
Another important consideration is the size of your home. If you have an apartment you might want to choose models that have multiple cleaning zones so you can clean your entire house in one go. Some models come with mopping capabilities that can be used to keep floors clean and fresh.
Robot vacuums are tough but they need to be maintained and cleaned regularly. Cleaning the rotating brushes, emptying the dust bin and wiping the sensors clean regularly will keep your robot running efficiently for the years to come. Many of the robot vacuum owners we have spoken to have been using their machines for 10 years or longer (and have replaced motors, brushes, and batteries along with time).
A basic robot will cost less than a large-sized vacuum cleaner, but they'll still do an excellent job at removing surface dirt, pet hair, and lint. You can use them to sweep your floor several times a day. The drawback is that they don't offer as much advanced technology, and could be prone to becoming stuck or requiring human intervention.
Object Avoidance
The
best robot vacuum under 200 robot vacuums use sensors, cameras or lasers to navigate your home and prevent getting stuck or falling down the stairs. Certain models are able to return to their dock or base when their battery is depleted. They also can avoid obstacles such as furniture cords and legs. Some of the more expensive models have mapping capabilities that allow them to memorize your home's layout and spend less time bouncing off walls.
You don't need to spend an enormous amount of money on the most expensive robotic vacuums. There are models that do a fantastic job of picking up pet hair and dirt from hard surfaces like tiles, wood, and low-pile rugs. They can also take care of bigger debris like nails that are rusty, metal screws or discarded toys. Some even come with a self-emptying base that is handy in the event that you don't wish to empty your trash bin after every cleaning run.

The majority of robotic vacuums have smart features that make your regular stick vacuum appear ancient with features like schedules, zone targeting and the ability to control them via an app or a voice assistant such as Alexa. You can also create cleaning zones as well as 'virtual walls' to block off areas you do not want the robots to go.
Some robotic vacs such as the Eufy 11S and my former top choice Roborock S8 Roborock S8, have obstacle avoidance technology that prevents them from derailing by running into furniture or tangling cords. Others, such as the iRobot Roomba j7+, are more sophisticated. AI obstacle avoidance that utilizes cameras and processor-powered smarts to see and avoid items like shoe cords, lamp cords socks, and pet waste. It's a little more expensive than other bots I've tried, however it does an excellent job of avoiding obstacles and never is stuck or tripped while working on my floor.
While the iRobot j7+ was a great obstacle avoidance tool but it wasn't always able to do an excellent job of avoiding dirt and crumbs from my rugs. It also tends to over-vacuum areas, which resulted in lots of dust in the filter, and a less-clean house.
Smart Mapping
A few of the top robot vacuums have an app that lets you set up cleaning modes, set schedules and see a map of your floor area that the machine covers. This is a very useful feature that other models don't have. This allows you to create profiles that automatically start the robot at specific times, and keep it running regularly. For example, cleaning the living room each day, or just before dinner.
A good app can also let you control your robot using voice commands. Certain models can be controlled by Amazon's Alexa or Google Assistant and can work completely hands-free. You can say "start with a clean" or "change cleaning mode" without having to use the app.
Find models with an enormous dust bin. This will allow you to perform numerous cleaning sessions without having to empty it. You can find models that self-empty, which eliminates the requirement to empty the

If you want a robot that can do more than just vacuum, you'll want to look into the possibility of a model which can mop your floors. They're usually bigger than robotic vacuums, and have a water tank that can hold multiple cleaning sessions worth of dust and dirt before needing to emptied.
Robots that are more sophisticated can create their own maps, and can remember the arrangement of your home from one cleaning session to the next, which prevents them from getting lost or stuck. This can make a significant difference in the efficiency of your robot vacuum as it will not have to return to the beginning when it encounters walls or furniture.
Our test subjects who tested the robot that has this capability found it to be extremely efficient, and they could watch TV or do other chores while the robot cleaned. Some models employ laser navigation to create the map of your home. You can then program them to clean the bedroom after dinner, or in all rooms while you are at work.
App Control
If you'd like to alter the frequency with which the robot cleans your home and select a cleaning option it is recommended to purchase one that is compatible with an app for mobile devices. Within the app, you can monitor the condition of your vacuum as well as its dust bin. Some of the most effective robot vacuums can even be operated by voice using Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri Shortcuts.
A robot with a self-emptying bin and washable filters is easy to keep clean, particularly when you are able to easily access the filter and remove it to wash it. Another excellent feature is a powerful brush that can be found in corners and along baseboards making it much easier to remove dirt and hair. Certain robots are better at avoiding chair leg than others. Some have sensors that automatically clean brushes to avoid obstruction.
Some robot vacuums come with navigation tools that aid them in navigating obstacles and learn your home. The most expensive models employ sensors and
Best robot vacuum under 200 cameras to detect obstacles such as stairs, furniture, and cords. Less expensive models might use boundary strips to mark areas that you don't wish it to enter. Avoidance of objects is particularly useful for families with children who scatter toys and socks around the home. This allows your robot to gather the items instead of scattering.
We're beginning to see more robots that have mops, which are beneficial for those who have hard floors and need to regularly clean them. These robots come with a reservoir of water built into their chassis or as a separate component that you can swap in when ready to mop. These robots may require frequent refills however, they are perfect for homes with hard floors and can't be cleaned with a vacuum.
These robots are packed with some impressive technology, and cost much less than you'd expect. In fact, you can get a good one for under $200 that does a decent job of cleaning pet hair and crumbs from hard floors, and also traversing the edges of lightweight carpets or area carpets. You can program the robot to sweep a room regularly and it can be controlled remotely via the app or by pressing buttons on its side.
