Saab cars manufactured since 1994 have an immobilizer feature built on coded keys. A new transponder is required in order to enable the addition of an additional key, and special programming. This is usually done by the dealer using the Tech2 diagnostic tool.
This can be expensive. This is why it is important to always have a spare key available.
Transponder key
The transponder key is a piece of hardware with an electronic chip that sends a signal back to the car when it is inserted into the ignition. The car then checks the signal to see whether it is the same as the one that is in the key. If the signals match it will unlock and begin. Jumpstarting the battery
