World of Warcraft
Item UpgradesThe upgrade of an item can be used to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type it can increase an item upgrader mod (
telegra.Ph)'s Mark Level or Rarity and boost additional stats.
Upgrades to gear in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specified amount.
Item Level
When an item gets upgraded, its base stats increase in value. This is the sum of all its upgraded advantages (attack magic attack, attack defense). Upgrades can be expensive, dependent on who you employ and what you do. This is due to the number of perks that need to be altered to
upgrade items an item.
It is also used as a gating requirement while queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It can also be used as a gating requirement when waiting to queue for dungeons and scenarios, and raids, as well as to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is capped at a lower level). Players can view their average level of item on their character sheet.
When deciding to purchase or sell gear players can look at the levels of the item. It's a measure of the item's condition and its quality. The item level can also be used to compare items when looking at the inventory of a vendor.
On PC, you are able to view the item level using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the complete item description, including its ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing in /itemlevel chat.
There are a variety of theories on how the level of an item is determined. One theory says that the level of an item is determined by a formula that calculates the value of an item's stats really are. It takes into account the fact that various perks have different value and that gems in sockets increase the value of the item overall. This can result in an item's ilvl which is calculated and is typically very close to Blizzard's real item level.
However, this isn't the only factor that determines the ilvl of an item, as the level of the area the item was dropped in could change the value of its stats, for example by adding an amount to its haste rating or crit rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have more the ilvl than items from lower level instances.
Item Stats
The item's stats can determine the fate of an item for players. The game makes use of a lot of them in various ways to encourage players to play with multiple weapons, and also to stop one weapon from being "the most effective." The base stats on a weapon are increased by the weapon's stat mods that are in turn enhanced by the player's level.
Upgrades to an item can increase its stats. The costs for upgrades are determined by the rarity of the item. For example, a grey or white item can only be upgraded once, whereas items with rare tiers can be upgraded many times at higher prices.
Another way to change the stats on an
item level upgrade is by affixing it. They are stat boosts which can be added by the player to an item. Affixes are used to give items additional damage or special abilities (such as the ability to revive dead or reduce cooling downs) or to make them unique by adding a name.
All affixes are re-rolled at the moment by selecting them in the upgrade window pressing the green button. This process will cost the player a certain amount of gold and other items that can be added to the upgrade gauge in the same way as other rerolling options.
In addition to the possibility of rerolling affixes, players may select which of the available stats to be kept on an item when it is upgraded. The possible ranges of stats for an item are based on the level of the item, but all items are guaranteed to have at minimum one stat within the range, unless it's an exclusive item or a God roll from a raid boss.
Another thing that could change is the option to upgrade equipment without having to reroll attachments, or pick which stats to enhance. But as with base equipment, this would need to be carried out on a per-item level, and the interface for item comparison will not show all the stats that could be that were gained or lost at the same time.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player increases the likelihood of locating items and the properties that are spawned by loot and the strength of these properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or the ability to
upgrade items. It provides players with the chance to upgrade equipment earlier in the game. This is particularly useful in early game runs because players tend to put the scaling of weapons and defenses over raw damage gains.
In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the probability of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith's overall chances of upgrading, which increase with each level of the item. It is also possible to be enhanced by using anti-materials such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.
Armor, shields, and weapons have a default Luck value of 40. These items can be improved with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the type of material) for a further +40 luck or to increase the Luck of an item up to 140.
Certain items, like the Hollow-infused weapon can also be crafted to increase the damage of any skill that deals damage by 5%. These items can be purchased in the shop or crafted using the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Not all upgrades work. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chance of success of an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their items if it is not successful.
When you upgrade an item the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the probability of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations on how much the success rates can be improved and the chance of an upgrade failing can't exceed 100%.
The luck of an item can also influence the success of an upgrade. Each item has an overall success rate of 25 percent and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent.
Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the inventory items therefore enchantment glints and other effects may be masked by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
