The process of upgrading an item, often called "upping," improves an item's stats. Each upgrade increment provides an increase in linearity of a given stat.

Players can recycle up to six items at a time to gain an indicator of the level of the item's upgraded components. The cost of recycling items scales according to their rarity and level.

Upgrade components

A level upgrade in Guild Wars 2 is a process that can increase the effectiveness of your weapon and armor. The majority of upgrade components that are installed into items cannot be removed or replaced without dismantling them except for legendary equipment and upgrades. If you have a glyph or rune you don't want to use but it hasn't been incorporated to the gear yet, you can transfer the item upgrading to another piece by selecting the Upgrade Glyphs menu on the Glyphs Panel. This will create a Glyph Set that includes the selected glyph.

If you want to remove a glyph from an item you must save it using an Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool. The item on which the glyph is placed will be destroyed, but the upgraded item can be salvaged by removing the glyph fragments.

A glyph added to an item could cause it to be unstable, and the shards of the glyph will disappear from your inventory when you dismantle the item. You can also place an inscription to your equipment to make it more valuable. Deferred Damage, for example, can store damage and then be dealt slowly to the wearer rather than all at once. Reroll tokens

Reroll tokens are used to change the affixes of equipment and weapons. They can be obtained from many sources, such as mystery boxes or rare drops from skulled monsters or by killing bosses. Leveling
