Lolita's Personality

Macaws are great companion birds. They are smart and affectionate. These birds do best with well-rounded families. They are prone to becoming bored and will find other ways to entertain themselves if their owners do not interact with them enough. Macaws that aren't socialized can become aggressive and even bite. It is essential that boundaries are clearly established to ensure that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general, are active birds who enjoy playing, interacting, and climb. They must spend at least two to three hours a day outdoors for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They love playing games, listening to music and learning new tricks. They enjoy visiting parks and playgrounds as well as local restaurants and bars. In addition to being a great pet, they also make wonderful companions for children.

Despite their adoring nature however, these birds can be loud and can be a distraction to those who live close by. They can be heard making ear-splitting screeches and loud cries which can be annoying to those living in condos or apartments.

This species is also monomorphic. Males and females can be difficult to distinguish. Due to this, the only way to determine sex is via DNA testing. Once sex is established pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases and tricks. This is not a quick process, and it's essential that the pet's owner is patient and understands that this is not something to be undertaken lightly. Positive reinforcement can help speed up the process, and can help to correct any behavioral issues.

Lolita's care

Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to retire from performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists believed that Lolita might suffer the same fate. Sadly, she did not get a chance to return to the sea.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and weakening her immune system. In addition, they keep her in an incredibly small tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her an ancestor, on a plan that would eventually take her to open waters. The plan would have included a sanctuary in Washington's west coast, where she could live for the remainder of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by the actual ocean and not an empty concrete tank.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that are close to their families until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for 40 years. Activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

She has been fighting persistent illnesses and an infection that left her in a fragile condition.

The Miami Seaquarium is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not provided information about Lolita's present health. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. These updates indicate that Toki is aging rapidly and her health is declining.

Since her captor does not have to disclose this information, it is unclear what health issue the orca is suffering from. However, a database of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a common cause in the deaths of orcas kept in captivity.

Despite the ongoing health concerns of Lolita many believe that she could be closer than ever to living a wild life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has expressed a commitment to moving the whale out of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.

After years of pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a seaside sanctuary and she will be able to swim deep in the water and possibly even be reconnect with her orca mother. These plans came too late to save the beloved whale that died on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
