Ford owners in Friendswood with new keyfobs will need to learn how to program it. The steps are simple and can be done at home.
The upgrade is already available for the new Fiesta superminis and will be introduced to the Focus in the next month. Ford claims it will make the car invulnerable to "relay attack" thefts using devices to amplify fob signals.
1. Turn the ignition off
A key fob is a useful device to have if you want to remotely lock, unlock, or start your Ford vehicle. It lets you customize the settings of your car according to the driver's preference. It is essential to keep your key fob by changing the battery when necessary. If you haven't replaced your fob for a long time, or if it has been unable to function, then the key fob could require programming. Fortunately, this isn't too difficult to accomplish and can be done at home.
You must first switch off the ignition. Open the driver's side window and then press the Unlock Button on the driver side of the vehicle. This will trigger the system to begin searching for a valid key fob. The control light will come on once the system has found one. After a few minutes, the lock system begins to cycle. This means that it is in programming mode.
If you hear a noise like a chime or bong, it means the system has found the new remote and is ready to program it. Press any button on the key fob that you want to program within eight seconds. The door locks should cycle, confirming that you have successfully programmed the new remote. Repeat steps 4-7 to program each subsequent remote.
After you've completed the above steps, turn the ignition to on. This will end the programming mode and erase the previously programmed key. If you have any problems while programming your new device, contact an expert for assistance.
While the Ford Fiesta is a great value, it's always good to keep it in good condition. That includes replacing the key fob battery regularly, especially if you frequently use it or drive in harsh conditions. In addition to saving money on replacements by replacing the battery, it will prevent your key fob from breaking when you need it the most.

The remote control may have to be programmed if your vehicle is equipped with an immobiliser as well as a key fob. This can be done by a dealer or your own. To perform the job properly, you'll need an electronic device and a tool. First, make sure that the car is off. Insert the new key in the ignition and set it to position II. After 10 seconds has been passed the control light will blink to indicate that the system is in programming mode.
When the vehicle is in programming mode, press the lock button on the new key. Repeat this process eight times. After the eighth time the door locks will cycle and confirm that the new key has been successfully programmed.
During this time, the car won't respond to other remotes. After the programming is completed, remove the key from the ignition and check the operation of the key again. If the key isn't working follow these steps again to program a new Ford Fob Key.

The procedure is easy and you don't even have to start the car to complete the process. Follow the steps below from MacPhee Ford to get your remote working again.
Sit in the driver's chair and shut all the doors including the trunk. Click the UNLOCK button in the driver's side door. The vehicle will emit an audio signal (a beep, bong, or chime) to signal to the driver that the system has detected the remote. Within 10 seconds, press any button on the first remote you want to program. The system will chime to confirm that the mode is being programmed and the door locks will cycle to notify you that the key is being programmed.
Repeat this step to program additional remotes. Once you're done turning the ignition 8 times from off to RUN in approximately 10 seconds. Press any button on your key fob to programme it. The door locks will cycle to inform you that the fob is being programed. After the lock cycle, switch off the ignition.

4. Turn the Ignition to Off
This is the reason Ford's PATS is so important. (PATS is a short form for Passive Anti-Theft System). PATS is designed to protect your car from being started by a fake key. It's a complex system and not something you'll be able to do at home. You can get the key programmed at the Ford dealership though.
They will be able to enter the system for you using an instrument. This will cost you money. It is worth it though because it will keep you from having to pay for an entirely new key fob as well as the cost of having it programmed by a third party.
The instructions for programming key fobs in the owner's manual can differ between different vehicles. In general, they'll require two already programmed keys readily available in order to program the new key fob. If you have lost both your original keys, it is recommended to go to a locksmith such as Pop-A-Lock so that they can program the new key for you.
To avoid entering the programming mode incorrectly You must study the instructions in the manual. This can result in problems with your keyless entry function therefore it is important to read and understand the entire procedure prior to beginning.
For most vehicles, you'll have to turn the ignition from off to on a specific number of times within a predetermined timeframe, usually around five or eight times. If you do this, you should hear a sound of locking or see a light signal which indicates that the vehicle is entering programming mode. When the vehicle is in programming mode, you will have to press an appropriate button on the new key fob. Depending on the model it could be the lock or unlock button.
You will need to repeat this procedure in case the key fob does not work. The process should take only a few minutes. Once you have successfully programmed the key fob, you are able to test it by inserting the key into the ignition and turning it on. If the doors lock and then unlock, the key fob has been properly programmed.
