Lolita's Personality

This species is also monomorphic. Females and males can be difficult to distinguish. For this reason, DNA testing is the only method to determine sex. Once the birds' sex is determined and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.

Lolita's care

For decades activists have been lobbying for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's return to the wild, marine biologists hoped that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to go back to sea.

Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her in danger. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and weakening her immune system. They also keep her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as to be a family member in a plan that would eventually take her to open waters. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast where she could live the remainder of her life and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. People from all over the country have demanded Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

As with any species of animal captive, a blue and gold macaw's health is based on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds require top-quality food, as well as plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. In captivity, a macaw well-fed can expect to live up to 60 years. Additionally, this magnificent bird needs plenty of room to move around and exercise.

Lolita's Health

Lolita is gorgeous, but her health is declining. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and would like to see that she is released back into the wild. Lolita has been a resident at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and performed as an attraction for tourists for a long time. She has battled chronic illnesses and an infection that has left her in a vulnerable state.

The Dolphin Company, which now owns the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information regarding the condition of Lolita. However, the non-profit organization Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. They have shown that she is aging quickly and that her health is declining.

Since her captor does not need to reveal the information, it's unclear what health issue the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies collected from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease is often a part in the deaths of captive orcas.

Despite the ongoing health concerns of Lolita blue & Gold Macaw many are hopeful that she may be closer than ever before to a wild life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to moving the whale out of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.

The move comes following years of public pressure, including from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea where she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even be reunited with the orca believed to be her mother. These plans came too late to save the whale who died on Friday as a result of what was believed to be a kidney problem.
