Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita blue & gold macaw's Personality

If they are not socialized properly macaws may become aggressive and can even bite. It is essential to have clear boundaries set to ensure that the macaw does feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds who enjoy playing, interacting, and climb. They need at least 2 to 3 hours a day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games while listening to music, and learning new tricks. They also enjoy going to the playgrounds and parks while hiking, and also visiting local bars and restaurants. Apart from being a fun pet, they also make wonderful companions for children.

These birds can be very loud, despite their adoration for them. They can also be a nuisance for those living nearby. They can be heard making ear-splitting screeches and loud cries that could be disruptive to those living in apartments or condos.

Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means that males and females are difficult to differentiate. For this reason, DNA testing is the only reliable way to determine sex. Once sex is known, pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.

Lolita's care

For a long time activists have been lobbying for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, activists believed that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to go back to the sea.

The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They are a danger to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they put her in an incredibly small tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and chestnut Fronted Macaw the Lummi tribe who view her as an ancestor in a plan to eventually move her to the open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could live the remainder of her life receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and are close to their families until they die. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Activists from across the country have called for Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

After you have completed Lolita's Teacher Education Program you will be ready to teach The Pilates Method anywhere on the planet! Lolita's Diet

This magnificent bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.

The decision comes after years of public pressure, including from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean and even reunite with the orca believed to be her mother. The plans were not enough to save the whale that passed away on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney issue.
